Understanding ADHD in Children

Every child develops in their own way. Some children find it harder to focus, stay organised, or manage their energy levels and sometimes these differences are part of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a common neurodevelopmental condition that affects children across the UK, and with the right understanding and support, children with ADHD can thrive at home, at school, and in their wider world.

ADHD presents in three recognised subtypes:

  • Inattentive

  • Hyperactive–Impulsive

  • Combined

Each child’s profile is unique, and many strengths often sit alongside the challenges.

These traits can also appear for many other reasons such as stress, sleep, learning differences, or emotional needs. That’s why a comprehensive assessment is essential for clarity.

Understanding Autism in Children

Every child experiences the world in their own way. Some children communicate differently, play differently, or process sensory information more intensely and sometimes these differences are part of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference, not an illness, and many autistic children have remarkable strengths alongside the areas where they need support. Around 1 in 100 children in the UK are autistic.

Early understanding can help families access the right support at the right time, but many children are diagnosed later because their traits were subtle, masked, or misunderstood.

Autism presents differently in every child. Some traits may be obvious, while others are more subtle or appear only in certain environments.

  • Social Interaction

  • Communication

  • Repetitive Behaviours & Routines

  • Sensory Differences

These traits can overlap with ADHD, anxiety, learning differences, or sensory processing needs which is why a thorough, holistic assessment is essential.

Combined or Co‑Occurring Conditions Profiles in Children

Many children who are autistic or have ADHD also experience additional neurodevelopmental, emotional, or physical differences. These are known as co‑occurring conditions. They are not caused by ADHD or autism; they simply occur more frequently alongside them. Understanding the full picture helps families access the right support early, reduces frustration, and ensures no part of a child’s experience is overlooked.

  • Anxiety Disorders

  • Oppositional or Behavioural Challenges

  • Epilepsy

  • Emotional and Behavioural Regulation Differences

Co‑Occurring Conditions - Learning Differences: Many children with ADHD or autism also experience specific learning differences such as Dyslexia (reading),   Dysgraphia (writing), Dyscalculia (maths) and Dyspraxia / DCD (motor coordination)

These differences can affect academic confidence, organisation, and processing speed. ‍

Children's Sleep Difficulties: Sleep challenges are common and significantly affect daytime behaviour, focus, and emotional regulation. Understanding the root cause helps families find practical strategies.
